New Suspension Bits for my Girl

August 7th, 2009 · No Comments · 240SX, Modifications, My Cars

It does me no good to write about cars without ever mentioning my own precious girls. :) While the S2000 isn’t much of a project anymore, the Miata is still in the works and most of the effort is going into building up our 240SX.

After all, the 240SX is almost twenty years old. She’s an amazing car, for sure. Even in her old age she’s a blast to drive, with her twenty year old SOHC engine and transmission. But with the amount of miles on her, it’s all taken it’s toll. We got her knowing she’s a project, so it was no surprise when the numbers were piling up quickly.

The starting point.

The decision was made to begin with the suspension. I’m a big fan of the money dropped into a proper suspension. After all, it’s where the majority of the money that was put into the Miata is at. Power is really nothing without control, and the suspension is what gives you that control. She had some Megan Racing track series coil overs on her, and some rear upper control arms. That was it, the rest is still original… And old. Or at least not replaced well, if it ever was. We aren’t entirely sure.

A pop of color

So she got some great new sway bars, that are powder-coated green. Way cool, honestly. Sounds weird with the car being red and all, but it’s rather nice because, well, it makes it easy to see. Does kinda suck when you put money into something that you can’t see all of the time… Then people tend to assume that you haven’t done anything, because they can’t see it.

Most of the bushings we’re replacing are Energy bushings, so those are red. You can see them where the end links are for the sways. The rear sway bar has some Megan Racing end links, and we had some for the front… That don’t work with our sway bar. :( So I guess we’re still looking for those. The red and green are looking nice, though. New parts are always great!

Then there’s her newest pair of goodies, the front tension rods. These babies are fully adjustable, and a beautiful blue color… And, because of the location, it makes a great picture because there’s the red car, the blue rods and the green sway bar, and maybe a hint of the red bushings. Just awesome to see. I totally love it all!

Adding a dash of personality

Other than the new parts goodies, she also got a new sticker! This one’s for her favorite sport, drifting! It’s a D1 Grand Prix sticker, which is awesome. Professional drifting is so great to watch… And, of course, she’s got another of my favorite stickers – “Get it straight, drive sideways!” :)

Sneak peak of what’s to come

Anyhow, the best part is that we’re making progress! Slow progress, but progress nonetheless. Next update will probably be showing off her new gold wheels with some new rubber and a real alignment. After that… Well, I’m not entirely sure. We’ve got a ton of stuff we want to get for her, and some are higher on the list than others, for sure.

Meg

In 2007, Meg began learning about cars. Two years later, she had a very modified '97 Miata and a '90 240SX project car, as well as the Rookie of the Year autocross title. Life now completely revolves around cars and she wouldn't have it any other way. CarsxGirl is her way to encourage others to get into racing (it's not horribly expensive!), to document & share her car builds, an outlet to share & improve her automotive photography skills and to show that real car girls do exist!
