Cars Kept Me Out of Sororities

March 23rd, 2010 · 3 Comments · Random

This may be one of my weirdest stories yet, but hear me out… It’s true, I swear, lol.

How Cars Kept Me Out of Sororities

One of the big things you find in colleges are fraternities and sororities. While some do live up to the party reputations portrayed in various media forms, not all are like that. Yeah, some live it up, but others are really down to earth. If you want to, you can find one that fits you… There are plenty!

Well, I’ve always been the kind of person who had a hard time making friends. The lure of sororities became something I wanted to check out — I mean, they promise that you’ll make friends for life! I can’t even get friends at my school to last beyond a semester here, that would be nice to have these contacts friends for life.

So I looked into it on my campus. I went to the informational meeting, I talked to a girl who was in the one I was looking at, I did my research and I even paid the application fee.

I got a call, and was invited to go and hang out with the girls, which I did.

You know what? It was fun! All sober fun at that. One time I went and hung out at the house, playing games and just being silly and having girl talk. Another time I went with to a basketball game… Which was pretty damn fun, honestly. We made little cheer items and had a silly time, with stupid cheap (free, I think) food and companionship.

The Costly Reality They Don’t Tell You

I was totally buying into this whole sorority thing…. Until I began to look into the actual buying in part. You see, membership isn’t free. Far, far, far from it, actually. It’s nearly ridiculous.

If I remember right, it cost nearly $1,200 for your first semester of membership. It was the most expensive, but you still had to pay your dues after that, which is in the hundreds of dollars.

Um, yeah…. I had no idea how I would come up with all of that!!!

I'd need a Money Tree to come up with it, that's what.

So I gave up on the idea, reasoning that it was too much money for not enough benefit to me, considering my husband was never a fan of the idea anyhow. (Thanks to bad media portrayals.)

Last I heard, the friend who made me think about joining had given up on the sorority because of some retarded girl drama. Figures!!

Why Cars Are Better Than Sororities

1. The people aren’t a bunch of drama people… If they are, there are plenty of no-drama enthusiasts to hang out with. Some say we’re boring, but we like simple lives.

2. The cost for cars is always worth it, where as a sorority seems to cost a lot for not a whole lot. My car is always there when I want to get my money’s worth, no schedule changes required.

3. Here’s a sad but true fact: Part of why I wanted to join a sorority was to get some t-shirts from group activities. I felt like I had a hugely boring life because none of my shirts actually came from events, or at least not the sort I’d want to wear…

Well, I now have more car shirts than I probably need, and many of them are from events I’ve participated in and have good memories of. And stories that nobody will be mad at me for retelling!

Yup, cars sure beat sororities for me…. :)

Meg

In 2007, Meg began learning about cars. Two years later, she had a very modified '97 Miata and a '90 240SX project car, as well as the Rookie of the Year autocross title. Life now completely revolves around cars and she wouldn't have it any other way. CarsxGirl is her way to encourage others to get into racing (it's not horribly expensive!), to document & share her car builds, an outlet to share & improve her automotive photography skills and to show that real car girls do exist!

Haha, yeah… There’s membership dues and house dues and like a huge list that comes into play, and it’s not a little bit of money either it’s a fairly good chunk. Kinda made me wonder how all the girls afforded that and all the stuff they always had with either part-time jobs or no jobs. (I know some of them had student loans to supplement fat scholarships, so not the way to go….)
