Cars X Girl

Anyone can own a Porsche.

April 2nd, 2010 · 9 Comments · Rant

I am completely, utterly and totally sick of the people who try to talk cars without knowing their facts.

I am sick of people who tell me that wanting to own a Ferrari is a pointless dream and that the car is not worth the money. They are wrong — it is possible, I won’t go broke over her and they are completely worth every penny. We’re lucky that Ferrari even makes cars for people to buy.

It’s called google, now use it!

There have been many times where I wanted to say something I was only 95% certain of. To make sure I didn’t go on and make myself look stupid, I did a quick google search. In about thirty seconds, I can verify that I’m either on mark or way off.

Now, most of these comments are made on non-automotive blogs. For those of us gearheads, we know that the general population is most definitely car-retarded. So it’s really to be expected.

Why it irks me…

There’s a specific reason why it irks me so bad — People can be such pricks and haters when it comes to cars. Really, when it comes to perceived wealth via cars.

I’ve had enough of the jealous spite from people when it comes to our eight year old Honda, our S2000. People definitely treat you differently when they think you have more money than they do… And not in a nice way, most of the time.

I wish people wouldn't be such pricks about our choice in cars.

Funny enough, people become a lot friendlier when they find out she’s eight years old and cost less than a brand new Scion. Then get shocked again when they find out she’s paid off. But you know, just a day in the life of a gearhead here.

Anyone can own a Porsche. I’m serious.

One spiteful comment I hear a lot is directed at those who own Porsches, as if those who own Porsches snob their noses at the rest of society.

Yes, I take offense to this. Not because I currently own a Porsche or even have had one yet, but because numerous friends of mine are Porsche owners. In fact, my husband and I have been somewhat officially invited to tag along with the local Porsche club on their various outings… All without owning a Porsche ourselves. We’re just huge fans. ;)

We know guys who keep their Porsches spotless. We know guys who’s Porsches are strictly for racing. And there’s one guy who’s Porsche I absolutely adore — a 914 with a 911 engine, that’s completely track-prepped and he drives the crap out of her on the street. Just plain awesome. :D (Oh, her paint is crap, yeah, but come on… A 911 engine in a 914. Beat that power to weight.)

Note that I never said anything about the type of Porsche one can own. Just that anyone who can afford to own a car can afford to own a Porsche.

I’m not going to bother with posting ads here now to back myself up… Those who know I’m right know it, and I’m hoping to spur those who think I’m wrong to look it up for themselves. Yes, some Porsches are ridiculously expensive — Not everyone can own a Carrera GT. But nearly anyone can buy a 914 or a 944.

Personally, my dream is to own a 911 SC, the 911′s sold between 1978 and 1983. I just completely love the body style… Perfect. And she can be mine for under $20,000.

I couldn't have found a better picture that sums up this car, I don't think.

In 2007, Meg began learning about cars. Two years later, she had a very modified '97 Miata and a '90 240SX project car, as well as the Rookie of the Year autocross title. Life now completely revolves around cars and she wouldn't have it any other way. CarsxGirl is her way to encourage others to get into racing (it's not horribly expensive!), to document & share her car builds, an outlet to share & improve her automotive photography skills and to show that real car girls do exist!

I like the 911SC, and I’m not so big on 911s. I sneak a peak every now and then and see what 911SCs are going for. To me this car is what a Porsche is. I’m not allowed to bring another car home for a while though, even if it follows me home.

Perceived wealth based on cars is pointless. I wish people would just be happy with the car-ness of the car, regardless of the make.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been a lifelong sports car fan without the deep pockets to back it up. My mom used to call it “wine on a beer budget”…I just called it attainable dreaming. Finally the day came when I bought a Porsche 911. Loved every second of it. Then, not too long after that, I came across a Ferrari that I realized could be had for about the price of a mini van. I debated and debated and finally just pulled the trigger. Got a GREAT deal on it and market prices are higher than what I paid for it. Haven’t had a lick of trouble with it either.

Keep the dreams alive. They are ALWAYS attainable. You just never know when the opportunity will present itself to let you fulfill one.

Thank you for saying that!! :D I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that if I’m crazy enough to want it bad enough, I’ll find a way to get it… ^_^ Ferrari by 30 — that’s my goal, haha. (550 Maranello is what I’m shooting for.)

GOD I agree. Couldn’t agree more. I dream to own a Porsche one day, though my ultimate choice in cars is something I can work on and enjoy, but a Porsche is just something I’ve always wanted. In all honesty, I don’t really care which one I get, I want it.

I also hate those people who try to act like they know cars, and all they’ll talk about are Ferrari’s, Lambo’s, Porsche’s, etc., when really all they have to say about them is “Yeah they’re so fast! I’ll bet a Lambo could beat an Porsche!”

I can imagine the kind of crap you can get from owning an S2000…all the wannabes jock you…people don’t realize one can be had for like 8k down here in So Cal..it’s weird the image they’re given..

I hope one day you’ll succeed your dream, and that beautiful Porsche will be yours (definitely go for the White too :D )

Haha, Lambo beating Porsche…. Maybe some, but not all. :P (And even then most people don’t really know that the Carrera GT isn’t the fastest Porsche built, it only is because Porsche made it so, which I can kinda understand why haha.)

Yeah, it’s kinda annoying after a while, especially since we paid about $16k for ours, plus the mods. Yes, she has a $1,000 intake. Yes, the hood is carbon fiber. Yes, she has an OEM hard top. But we’ve had the car since 2007 for crying out loud! D: The hubs also deployed, which paid for a lot of those mods. Plus, well, our cars are just what we spend oodles of our money on. ;)

Hmmm, yeah, I think white will be nice!! ^_^

Ah the classic enthusiast vs non. And the people who have stopped dreaming vs those who dream every day.

It’s sad that because some people have let their dreams die they try to crush those of others.

911SC spit oil :[ 3.2 Carrera (87+ with upgraded trans) is the way to go for an N/A :]

I would love to have a 3.2 Carrera or a 993 Turbo as a track car, and a F430 for the weekends.

Dream as big as you’d like, as often as you like. Dreaming’s free :]

These cars are funny! I have wanted one since I laid eyes on one when I was 6. I am now 26 and just purchased a 1981 Porsche 911sc after searching for years for one in my price range. The car is absolutley gorgeous and I love it. Sometimes I just go out to my parents garage and just stare at it for hours. Now is the time to do it. A house is my next purchase and I would never be able to afford one than. People deffinetley turn up there noses when they hear what I bought. But, I bought the car for me because I like driving. It is not a show-off car, it is a classic car. One I can cherish forever. Keep searching and don’t let other peoples ignorance discourage you. Here’s to the dreamers!

Hear, hear!! :D Congrats on your baby! You sound like the kid in the one Porsche commercial, if you’ve ever seen that — almost exactly!

Thank you for sharing your story, it gives me a LOT of hope that I’ll be like you at 26. :) (Heck, some days it feels like enough of an achievement to OWN the cars I do already, at 21… Ha. But I’m always focused on the next acquisition or the next major fix!)
